Looking out for the little ones!

About Dr. Marisa!

Hello new friends! I am a board-certified pediatrician who has always had a special      interest in eco-friendly and non-toxic products for the home.  Once my daughter was  born, I developed an even greater sense of the importance of healthy products for our children and to preserve the environment around them.  I am hoping to bring that  awareness to you… parents, grandparents, teachers, and anyone else involved in the    growth and development of our smallest people.

Why is it important?

Those little growing bodies are especially vulnerable to the effects of harmful chemicals.  Toxins and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are found in toys, feeding    materials, bedding, clothing, furniture, food, and so many other places.

SERIOUSLY? Why are there so many chemicals??

In today’s world, many people are looking for products that are inexpensive and convenient.  In order to accomplish this, chemicals are often added during manufacturing.  To mass-produce food, pesticides and preservatives are commonly utilized.  But at what cost?  There can be acute symptoms, but also, exposure over time can lead to problems with development, hormones, asthma, behavior, and even cancer.  I will explore various categories in my posts!

What can we do?

Welllllll there is no way to fully eliminate all exposures in our daily lives.  We can do our best to minimize them.  And we must raise awareness so that healthy products and foods can be readily available and affordable for everyone!

About Kate, CRNP!

Hi everyone!  I am a Certified Registered Nurse Practitioner who has worked in pediatric primary care for the past 2.5 years.  Before this, I was a registered nurse and worked in adult critical care, organ donation, hospice, and pediatric transplant.  I discovered my love for working in pediatrics a bit later in my career, and it has proved daily to be one of the most fulfilling experiences of my life.

I’m happy to be joining Dr. Marisa on this journey to foster awareness of the  environment around our kids.  I am equally excited to share thoughts and insights into the crazy, confusing world of our kiddos from that sweet newborn period through those tricky teen years.

When my now (almost) 7-year-old was born, I really knew nothing about pediatric medicine and nothing at all about being a parent to a newborn (or a toddler or older child, for that matter), and I truly understand how frustrating it can be. Making decisions for your children can be so overwhelming and while no one can give us parents all of the answers, we can at least share with you some tidbits that may demystify some of it.

Welcome to our family!!
